Who's Who 2024-25

Mrs G Hillier - (Maternity Leave) Headteacher, Designated Safeguarding Lead

I am delighted to be the Headteacher of Widmer End and feel proud to be leading such a wonderful community school. My early career was in recruitment and event management, before embarking on my PGCE and later a Masters in Education.
I have been teaching for 15 years and am passionate about teaching and learning and giving all children the best start in life. Widmer End gives the children many opportunities to thrive and find their passion and everything we do is underpinned by our strong values  and ethos. My hobbies are walking my dog, yoga and running. I really enjoy taking running club every week with the children.

Mrs V Marshall - Acting Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

I joined the team here at Widmer End in September 2022 as Deputy Headteacher and Year 3 teacher. I am thrilled to be a part of such a warm and welcoming school family. I am lucky enough to have been teaching for 25 years and have been able to work and gain experience in three different schools in three separate boroughs across the country. I love every subject we teach in primary school but my passion is for everything English! I have been a Lead Literacy teacher and now work as a county KS2 writing moderator, supporting colleagues with their writing judgements across Buckinghamshire. I have worked as a mentor for the last ten years and enjoy my role in supporting colleagues early on in their career as well as those with a little more experience! I have always had a love of music; I play the piano and am the first to volunteer to lead school choirs, taking them to exciting places such as the Royal Albert Hall and the O2 arena to perform in front of thousands, as well as local events and places such as residential homes to entertain the elderly. I have a husband and two teenage girls who keep me very busy at home, as well as my little Welsh terrier, Teddy, who I love taking for walks in the countryside as often as I can fit them in! I am so excited to be part of the Widmer End team and feel privileged to be here to support and guide the children in their journey towards becoming successful and responsible citizens when they leave us at the end of Year 6.

Mrs L Ross-Wood - SENDCo, Acting Deputy Headteacher

I joined the team as SENDCo here at Widmer End in September 2023 and have been warmly welcomed by both children and staff.

I have been a qualified primary school teacher for twenty years. prior to Widmer End, I worked at a small village school in Maidenhead where I grew a special interest in supporting children with special educational needs.

I live in Buckinghamshire, in Burnham and enjoy a very scenic journey to school each day. I live with my husband and two children who are thirteen and 11 and our pets - Baxter, a black miniature poodle and Snowy - our very friendly outdoor rabbit.

In my free time, I enjoy exercise - especially strength and conditioning fitness. I use kettlebells to get a good workout and attend a CrossFit gym close to where I live. Feeling physically strong makes me feel capable and supports my positive mental health too. As a family, we enjoy being fairly active and adventurous -  skiing, camping, cycling and plenty of dog walks.

I'm really excited to work here and especially enjoy getting out on the playground and into classrooms where I am always greeted with friendly smiles.

Miss K Allen - Pastoral Lead, Attendance Officer, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

My background is working with Children aged 4-19yrs with complex ASD, emotional, social and behaviours. I joined Widmer End as a TA in April 2021 and moved into my new role as Pastoral Lead, DDSL and Attendance officer in September 2022 and I haven’t looked back. I love my job, as hard as it can be!

I believe all children’s behaviours are a form of communication and I strive to support the children who find school life tricky by providing a safe place and to be a person who understands them. ‘You can’t and shouldn’t bash a square peg into a round hole’ is my motto! But with encouragement, understanding, guidance, support and love, sometimes the square peg can make their own place to fit. Difference is only to be championed. The Pastoral care I lead within the school includes; Feelings Detectives, Bucks Mind Peer Mentors, Nurture Sessions, alongside everyday care for the wellbeing of every pupil at Widmer End.

I love Makaton and run a lunchtime club to share my love through music and songs….my other hobbies are being outside as much as possible, ballet and going to the theatre. I have 2 boys of my own, 18 year old and 12 year old who both keep me on my toes!

The children in school are who I am here for and they are always my number one priority….they never fail to put a smile on my face and make me laugh every day.

We work very closely with our external links at the NHS Mental Health Support Team, School Nursing Team and Bucks Young Carers who provide the next step intervention to support our children's mental health and wellbeing. Please contact Miss Allen for further information.

Miss P Bailey - Bursar

My hobbies are going for long walks with my husband and dog, baking delicious cakes and dancing!

Miss Z Ilić - EYFS Phase Leader, Reception Teacher  (Maternity Cover)

I joined Widmer End as a volunteer in January 2024 and absolutely loved helping out in Reception in my spare time whilst I took a break from teaching. It’s now my pleasure to take the reigns of EYFS when Mrs Watson is on maternity leave and I am really looking forward to being back in the classroom full-time! I became a teacher because of how much I loved my primary school teachers and feel passionately about the importance of Early Years, giving children an amazing start to their education and making learning fun.

In my spare time I love walking my dog in the countryside with my fiancé and spending time with friends and family. I also love reading, arts and crafts and playing games!

I have a degree in Education, PGCE and a Masters in Psychology and have always enjoyed working with children, gaining experience in many different settings throughout my degrees. Growing up I did a lot of volunteering work at my local youth club. My main hobbies are dancing, going to the theatre especially musicals, watching movies, and spending time with my friends and family.

Mrs L Van Der Merwe - Lower Phase Lead, Year 2 Teacher

At high school, I had an amazing Maths teacher, Mrs. Anneli Stark, whom I adored.  It was because I wanted to teach Maths like she did that I became a teacher.  ‘It is a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together.’  I completed my teacher training at the University of Stellenbosch and began my teaching career in three different schools in sunny South Africa.  We came to England in 2004 and loved it so much that the three years we planned to stay … well, have become far more!

With over 25 years of experience teaching within the primary phase, I have been at Widmer End for 12 years, working across Key Stage 1 and 2.  No two days at school are the same and hearing the ‘a-ha’ moment when something clicks for a child who has been struggling with their learning is priceless.  Currently, I teach in Year 2 with the responsibilities of Lower Phase Lead, Reading Lead (including Accelerated Reader), Computing Lead, and School Librarian.

Reading is one of my favourite things to do, and it always has been. There are books in every room of my house!  Even when I was a little girl- a long time ago, I used to love reading.  I even used to read under the covers in bed with a torch.  Reading allows me to stay up to date with new educational trends and allows me to relax too.

I also love teaching Maths and believe that Maths is magic!  Teaching is a rewarding job, and I love to see the progress children make and instil a belief in each one I teach that they can achieve whatever they want to if they believe in themselves.

I am married, and we have two young adults, both of whom attended Widmer End when they were little.  Out of school, I enjoy doing a range of crafts and spending time with my family.  We speak English and Afrikaans at home and have a little Yorkshire terrier called Buddy.

Ms Z Atkins - Year 3 Teacher

I have been a teacher for more than 20 years and have taught in primary schools in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, as well as International Schools in China and Chile. Even though I’ve been settled back in the UK for many years now, my ‘international’ experience has influenced my teaching and I encourage children to look at the world beyond their own community, to see how the lives of others are different to their own. I am passionate about ensuring children are equipped for their future whilst caring about the planet and having empathy for others. I have run many extra-curricular clubs including Eco Warriors, Fairtrade, Globetrotters and languages, to help children realise they can make a difference. As well as History and Geography, my favourite subjects to teach are Maths and Science – all of which can inspire awe and wonder!

I have always loved travelling and have visited every continent - including Antarctica! Now I’m mum to an amazing daughter who’s about to start secondary school, my travels tend to be closer to home. I love walking in the beautiful countryside we have here in Buckinghamshire and exploring other parts of the UK. I enjoy singing, having been a member of staff choirs at previous schools and even performed in a staff production of Mamma Mia.

I am really excited about teaching at Widmer End and looking forward to being part of the school community.

Mrs P Oxby - Year 4 Teacher

I'm Mrs Oxby and joined Widmer End in January 2021. I have been a teaching assistant for 5 years and am currently studying for my degree so that I can become a fully qualified teacher. I really love my job and feel privileged to be a part of educating children. I am currently in year 3 but have supported and taught in all year groups.

I love to cook, baking is something I do to relax. Before coming into education I ran my own catering company having appeared on BBCs Masterchef!

My husband and I have 2 children, 1 dog (who is very naughty) and 2 chinchillas. I like to spend time walking my dog and spending time with family and friends.

Miss J Weston - Year 5 Teacher

I started my teaching career 15 years ago and have mainly taught across KS2 during this time. I started teaching at Widmer End in September 2022 and I am currently teaching Year 5 on a Wednesday and Thursday. They are a wonderful class and I am thoroughly enjoying teaching them.

I have a passion for reading and enjoy sharing different books with the children, especially our DEAR time at the end of every day. Helping to engage children in reading and widening their exposure to books is really important to me.

On a personal note, I am a busy mum of 3 boys and, whilst life can be rather chaotic at times, it’s all good fun! I enjoy exercise, watching films and spending time outside with my boys.

Mrs E Archer-Doran - Year 6 Teacher

I've been part of the Widmer End CC School community since 2017 when my son started in reception. I volunteered as a parent helper and have been an active member of the PTA. I worked at Widmer End as an LSA in Pre-school and Year 6 prior to undertaking my PGCE and becoming a qualified teacher.

I have an honours degree in Sports Psychology which supported my previous careers as an ice skating and gymnastics coach which I did for approximately 13 years. I have always been passionate about working with children and I have continued to coach gymnastics at Booker Gym Club in my free time. I run the after school gymnastics club here at Widmer End which I started prior to my teaching training.

On a personal note, I am married with two children. My daughter still attends school here at Widmer End and my son has moved on to secondary school. Outside school I enjoy dancing, gymnastics, ice skating and music.

I have taught in nearly every year group over my teaching career but love being with the KS2 children and so I am so pleased to be in Year 6.

I love seeing children get excited by a new project or achieve a new skill, so being able to teach a range of skills and subjects to Year 6 is such a privilege.

I have a little girl here at Widmer - she loves coming to school and is excited by all the wonderful things that happen here.

I love the theatre, any opportunity to see a good musical, play or watch a drama, I am there. I also enjoy spending time with my family, going for long walks and visiting all the places around our area and hopefully get back into travelling a bit more during the holidays.
