Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Widmer End School
provides a welcoming, nurturing environment where every child is valued as a unique individual. We are committed to fostering independence, confidence and a lifelong love of learning through a carefully planned, child-led curriculum that responds to children’s interests and needs.
We pride ourselves on creating enabling environments—both indoors and outdoors—that inspire curiosity, creativity and exploration. Our skilled practitioners support and extend children’s learning through meaningful interactions, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and challenged.
Strong partnerships with parents and carers are at the heart of our approach. We believe that open, consistent home–school communication is key to supporting each child’s development, and we work closely with families to share achievements and next steps.
Through a balance of play-based learning and guided experiences, we ensure children develop the key skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1 and beyond. Our aim is for every child to leave EYFS as a confident, independent learner, ready to thrive.
In EYFS, children learn best through first-hand experiences, meaningful interactions,
physical activity and play. Our curriculum is built around three prime areas of learning; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. These are supported by four specific areas; Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Teaching in Pre-School and Reception balances child-initiated learning with adult-led activities. This includes small group focused sessions tailored to individual needs, daily phonics teaching through Read Write Inc. (in Reception), and short whole-class inputs such as stories, discussions, songs and early maths. Adults also work alongside children in their play, supporting and extending their interests across the curriculum.
