Widmer End Community Combined School is delighted to share the positive findings from its recent Ofsted inspection, which recognised the school as a “happy school where pupils are confident and motivated to learn.”
Inspectors praised the welcoming and supportive environment created by staff, noting that pupils “feel safe and secure because nurturing staff work closely together as a dedicated team.”
The report highlights how pupils thrive both academically and personally. Ofsted commented that pupils are enthusiastic about their learning and respond well to high expectations from staff, with “lessons calm and purposeful” and pupils eager to do their best.
Inspectors also recognised the strong sense of responsibility encouraged throughout the school. Pupils enjoy opportunities to take on leadership roles such as ambassadors and school councillors, helping them develop important life skills and confidence.
The school’s curriculum was praised as “well-designed,” with clear planning that helps pupils build their knowledge and understanding as they progress through the school.
A strong culture of reading was also noted. Ofsted found “a passion for reading throughout the school,” supported by staff with expert knowledge of how to teach phonics and ensure pupils develop strong reading skills from an early age.
Inspectors highlighted the positive start children receive in the early years, where teachers carefully assess children’s starting points and create an “exciting environment that promotes children’s curiosity.”
Personal development was another key strength identified in the report. Pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities, including clubs, trips and activities that help them develop socially and emotionally, while learning about important values such as unity, trust, courage, respect and kindness.
Leadership at the school was also commended. Ofsted noted that since the headteacher joined the school, a programme of improvements has helped the school to flourish, with staff “enthusiastic and determined to provide a good quality of education for pupils.”
The report concludes that safeguarding arrangements are effective, with staff well-trained and pupils learning how to stay safe both in school and online.
The school community is proud of the report’s recognition of the hard work of staff, pupils and families in creating a positive, nurturing and ambitious learning environment.
