Who's Who 2025-26

Mrs L van der Merwe

Lower Phase Lead, Year 4 Teacher

Teaching has always been more than just a job for me – it’s the spark I felt as a child when my own Maths teacher, Mrs Anneli Stark, made learning magical. I adored her, and because of her, I knew I wanted to inspire children the way she inspired me. “It is a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together.”

I trained at the University of Stellenbosch and began my teaching career in three schools in sunny South Africa. We came to England in 2004 and loved it so much that our planned three-year stay turned into... well, a lot more!

With more than 25 years of teaching experience across 2 continents, I’ve spent 13 happy years at Widmer End, working across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. If you ever walk past my classroom, you’ll probably hear laughter, curiosity, and maybe even a bit of ‘Maths
magic’ – because learning should be exciting! No two days at school are ever the same, and I believe there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s face light up when they finally ‘get’ something they’ve been working on – it’s why I love what I do. This year, I will be teaching in Year 4 and taking on the roles of Upper Phase Lead, Reading Lead (including Accelerated Reader), Computing Lead, and School Librarian. I also serve on the Governing Board in the role of Staff Governor and the Widmer End Senior Leadership Team.

Reading has always been one of my greatest loves – there are books in every room of my house! Even as a little girl (a long time ago now!), I would hide under the covers with a torch so I could read after bedtime. Reading keeps me up to date with new educational ideas and is also my favourite way to relax.

I also love teaching Maths, and I’m passionate about helping children believe they can achieve anything if they have confidence in themselves.

I’m married with two young adults who both attended Widmer End when they were little. Outside of school, I enjoy crafts and family time. At home, we speak both English and Afrikaans – and we’re kept busy by our cheeky little Yorkshire terrier, Buddy.

I can’t wait to see what this school year brings and to help every child shine in their unique way!
