Homework Expectations

At Widmer End, we believe that learning is a life-long process and that learning at home is an essential part of a child’s education. Home learning is any work or activity completed outside of lesson time. In Reception, children's home learning achievements are celebrated and shared within class.

The purpose of home learning is to:

  • Develop an effective partnership between school and parents to support children to achieve more in the time they are with us
  • Consolidate and build on learning in school by practising skills and applying these to new situations at home
  • Develop children’s confidence, independence and the self-discipline they need for personal study in preparation for secondary school and beyond.

In Reception, weekly activities set are as follows:

  • Phonics videos
  • Daily opportunities for reading
  • Handwriting task
  • Maths task (optional)

We expect children to have an opportunity to read with an adult daily, and for a minimum of 15 minutes to be spent on other homework set.

Holidays and project work

At Widmer End, we feel that children should take the time to have a natural break from school during the holidays.

There is no home learning set over Christmas and Easter breaks. During the summer holidays, children will be set a task to do at home as part of their transition to the next year group.
