Phonics

At Widmer End School, we use Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) to teach children to read confidently, fluently and with enjoyment. RWI is a systematic, highly structured programme which teaches children the sounds they need to read and spell, alongside developing their understanding of words and stories.

Children begin their phonics journey in Reception, where they learn to recognise and pronounce sounds, blend sounds together to read words and develop the foundations needed to become successful readers. Phonics teaching continues through Key Stage 1, with regular opportunities to practise and apply these skills when reading and writing.

Phonics sessions are daily and carefully matched to children's current knowledge and needs. Children are grouped according to their phonics stage rather than simply their class, allowing teaching to be targeted and ensuring that children are supported to keep up. We regularly assess children's progress and provide additional practice and support where needed.

We place a strong emphasis on reading books that match the sounds children have been taught, helping them to experience success and develop confidence as readers. Alongside phonics, children enjoy a wide range of high-quality books to develop their vocabulary, comprehension and love of reading.

Our Success in Phonics

We are proud of the progress our children make in phonics. Our Year 1 Phonics Screening Check results are consistently strong, with 100% of Year 1 children achieving the expected standard in 2026. Our results are above national outcomes and reflect the impact of our consistent approach to phonics teaching.

We continue to monitor children's progress closely and use assessment to identify children who may need additional support, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to become a confident and successful reader.
